Cup Class - New Prep Category | 1:35 PM 11/6/2009 | |
|
Giving consideration to adding in a new prep category for the Cup class cars that would provide for a lower weight and hp/tq limit for power challenged cars often seen for the budget minded guys racing on high mileage street or junk yard motors. The idea being to give these drivers a bit of a leg up in weight to offset, at least in part, for the missing power. The drop in weight wont get them near the frt I dont expect, but will help them be a bit more competitive in the field for few extra bucks to lose weight. I see a few engines down in the mid 120's and quite a bit more around 130. The very nature of these engines should have lower numbers for TQ so limits would be set accordingly. The numbers being considered are 134/134 at 2500 lbs for Stock cars only.

If you want to give them the same HP/WEIGHT ratio as the 944CUP cars....these car should probably be set at 2425 @ 134 = 18.092600 @ 144 = 18.06

Tim the idea is not to encourage people to build to that level for the lighter weight. It is meant to help those that can't or have not rebuilt their engines become more competitive. Not necessarily 100% equal, but much closer. The lighter car with equal power to weight ratio will generally be the preferred combination. Your proposal would in effect penalize the drivers with cars prepared to the limit. The lighter car will always brake and corner better.

I think this is a splendid idea. I also think that Bill's point is logical in a theoretical world. In Cup world, where all the "heavy" cars have awesome suspension set-ups that the "light" cars won't have (because of the aforementioned brokeness of the drivers), Tim's suggested parity in power to weight ratio is perfectly acceptable.

Rob how do you know someone won't 'build' a car to the low Hp, low weight with awesome suspension?
